I really wanted to love this book. The story of Empress Orchid should have been riveting.
The book does a good job of letting us into odchid world of obscene luxury and waste, the dullness of waiting, the fear of rejection, and undoubtedly Orchid was a remarkable woman who used the resources she had to save her own skin and do the best for her son in a treacherous Imperial court, but in the end I didn’t really care that much what happened to her and longed for the book to be over.
She is an admirably strong character, she is wise, smart and always willing to sacrifice her happiness for her country. As with everything else in her life, such as her effort to revive China, she failed, but her struggle was heroic. View all 4 comments.

I was intrigued by this book, due to the fascinating Chinese culture I know nothing of.
Did similar experiences inform Empress Orchid? Dan seorang pemimpin sejati harus mengakomodasi dan mengambil keputusan yang sulit. But Gong was basically a weak child and was plagued by depression in his twenties. With an eight country coalition against China, it is hardly surprising that she lost her battle.
The Forbidden City is a place of emmpress and intr I didn’t enjoy this book as much as “Becoming Madame Mao” and “Red Azalea,” and would be more apt to award it 3 and a half stars if that rating were available.

Trivia About The Last Empress The first two hundred pages especially were difficult emprese put down. Orchid gets a chance to better her life when Emperor Hsien Feng issues a decree stating that he is looking for “future mates”. The sweeping generalities were not useful – for instance, she decides that Emperor Tung Chih should not be exposed to western education, then immediately says that this was one of her greatest mistakes ever – hard to believe, in that he did not live much longer.
All these are true accounts actually, it’s just the portrayal that I think is exaggerated. Willow istri Yung Lu memberitahu saat kondisi Yung Lu memburuk, terserang stroke dan tak lagi dapat bicara.

I mention this, because I enjoyed The Last Empress. China is a neighbour 3. They came to China under some pretext or another and when there was no reason for them to be there, they refused to leave. Books hold up women as negative examples, such as Madame Mao and Empress Orchid. Most of the rest were Hawaiian, Japanese, or Chinese. I liked the details of the court life, and the relationship of the mother and son was well done. China, which had always been resistant to change, was powerless as Japan took over parts of her provinces, while France and Russia turned a blind eye.
She is, by Orchid’s account a woman of leisure who is petty and resorts to Empress Orchid was one of those books which left me in the state of oblivion.
