I mention all this because I am trying to figure out why I really didn’t like “The Secret Eleanor” very much. This is the only one that focuses fully on the character of Petra and her feelings from jealousy to low self-esteem.

Arguably, the best feature was that the novel started to not focus on Eleanor but instead focused on Eleanor’s sister Petronilla. Holland has focused her attention on that short period of Eleanor’s life when aqutania made the decision that shaped the rest of her life. Not one of her better books. It made me more want to look up Sharon Kay Penman’s novels featuring Eleanor of Aquitaine than ever read anything else by Holland. And Eleanor of Aquitaine herself, who is usually shown as proud but shrewd, in many books having affairs but always an excellent ruler Eleanor of Aquitaine was one of the most powerful women in European history.

Once Petra switched places, and became the secret Eleanor, she felt noticed and beautiful. Recommended, especially if you just can’t read another badly written historical novel by Phillips or Weir. By the end of the book, I found myself wanting it to continue!

But that being said, so much, the pregnancy, Petronilla’s role in things, while it doesn’t contradict any known history, as the author said, there’s absolutely no reason to believe it did happen.
