Letts named the characters at the centre of his play the Westons, putting the tantalising American promise — “Go west, young man” — right in the middle of their names, then trapping them inside a crumbling house and watching them tear each other apart. As a result, Violet became a pill popper and the three daughters carried baggage for their entire adult lives.
Letts considers sound to be a very strong storytelling tool for theater.

They fall into an argument almost immediately, during which Violet accuses her of abandoning her family and breaking her father’s heart.
It opens with a prologue that is worth going back and rereading after getting about halfway through, just to see what new resonance it has now that the reader has more information. Yet, Letts has crafted a modern classic play rife with memorable characters, who will stay with me even in written format. If the author is God of the Play, then Letts is a harsh and unrelenting god, destroying any hope for wugust or resolution in even his most deserving creation.
Barbara, now drinking heavily, offers Johnna a chance to quit and leave the toxic environment of the Weston house, but she chooses to stay.
